about our firm

WHY WE ARE DIFFERENT

Every Architecture firm offers personalized service, on-time projects, and solutions that accommodate budget expectations. We do those things, and we do them well, but we also bring a human aspect to the design process.

We are a group of talented designers, thinkers, solvers, and best of all, genuine, humble people. This isn’t just a job for any of us; it’s our passion and part of our identity. We are enlivened by the built environment and are determined to create inspirational spaces that people want to be in as much as we enjoy designing them and seeing them through to life. Proud of our strong reputation of designing and detailing buildings of the highest quality, we love our work and couldn’t be more committed to our projects and to our clients.

BBL stands out in this industry for our internal alliance. Each team member has a variety of expertise and there isn’t an unyielding line between our job pursuits. This extends beyond the walls and minds of the firm where we are recognized by our ability to deliver innovative designs while carefully listening to and collaborating with our clients and their needs.  After all, we are all in this together.

Our firm culture is an asset not only to our clients, but to each project. Our collaborative demeanor means a project is not limited to the expertise of the individual members working on it, but that there is a larger, accessible network of creative thinkers, designers, and engineers where strengths convene to offer insight and expertise to every project.

In other words, we are collaboration junkies and we enthusiastically work together with our clients to create architecture that positively interfaces with the end-users on a daily basis.

Matt Atkins

Project Manager

After graduating from Syracuse University in 2003, Matt embarked on a cross country road trip and ultimately landed in Portland, OR. He worked in the Architectural industry for 9 years before becoming a Project Manager with BBL in December of 2012. Matt's broad depth of architectural knowledge ranges from planning through project design, document coordination and construction administration.

When out of the office, Matt enjoys being with his family and participating in a range of outdoor activities such as disc golf, sailing and hiking.

Lang Bates

Principal (bbl), aia

Lang is one of the founding principals of BBL Architects. After receiving his degree in architecture from the University of Oregon, Lang spent time working as a designer in architectural offices in Paris and the Portland metropolitan area before joining BBL in 1978.

An award winning designer, his projects include a wide variety of educational, civic and commercial buildings.  His projects are known for their clean attractive appearance, their logical arrangement of spaces, an infusion of natural light and the provision of energy saving measures. Lang is a skilled facilitator who understands how to develop design consensus between multiple stakeholders. His careful and inclusive approach to identify the needs and requirements of the user groups provides a firm foundation upon which to develop functional designs that address everyone’s aspirations for a project.  His design process provides an organized pathway to project success.

Lang is one of the first ones in the office every morning, but don't try to find him on a Friday afternoon unless you have a golf cart and a low handicap!

Ryan Flattery

Designer, assoc. aia

Ryan grew up in Northern Minnesota, surrounded by forests and glacial rocks. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Minnesota in 2006. After a weekend visit to Portland in early 2007, Ryan gathered his earthly possessions and migrated to the Northwest.  Within an hour of loading his things into a U-Haul, the apartment wing he lived in caught fire and flooded.  It was clearly meant to be.Ryan attended Portland State University for graduate school. Ryan is heavily engaged with the research aspect of architecture.  He is optimistic about the possibilities new material technology and digital tools have to offer with regard to materiality, thermal performance, daylighting, energy efficiency and sustainability.

Outside of the office, Ryan keeps quite busy playing competitive disc golf, hiking, riding his bike, backpacking, fly-fishing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, rock climbing, summiting mountains, gardening and cooking.

Kalle Fletcher

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE

Kalle has a genuine passion for architecture, marketing, and writing and has found her niche as our lead Business Development Associate. Unlike many in her same position, Kalle has a degree in Architecture and worked in that capacity for many years prior to shifting her focus to marketing. She has never missed a deadline, no matter how tight the schedule and can often be found on a Saturday in the office, sipping tea and creating BBL’s latest proposal.

Kalle is an airline pilot’s wife with two daughters; luckily she loves to do a variety of home projects because things seem to break or malfunction the second Tony leaves on a trip. She also enjoys baking and feeding co-worker Phil’s chocolate chip cookie “addiction”. After publishing her first non-fiction book in 2009, Kalle has become a budding children’s book author and has a lineup of books she would like to publish someday.

Pam Gates

ASSOCIATE (bbl), LEED AP BD+C, Assoc. AIA

An irreplaceable member of our team since 1995, Pam's positive demeanor and optimism radiates. Her attention to detail and strong communication skills help her accurately coordinate technical requirements between designers, engineers, building officials, manufacturers and contractors. Pam has extensive experience communicating with building jurisdictions and researching and producing documentation for land use review. In her free time, Pam can be found in her garden or hiking and biking in Oregon's beautiful outdoor environment.

Phil Hatzenbuehler

project manager

Phil truly enjoys his career and his clients know it. His eye for detail is incredible and has quickly become one of BBL’s leading Project Managers. He gives it all he has and more. In 2013 he was awarded a position on “Engineering News-Record’s” Top 20 Under 40 in the Northwest Region.

“The principals at BBL are willing to believe in your capabilities and let you grow as a team member while offering support if needed.”

His favorite aspect of his job is watching the drawings turn into a finished project (but the chocolate chip cookies in our break area are a close second).

Phil and his wife Katie have two daughters, Lily and baby Maya who was born in 2014. In his “spare” time and when not completely consumed with dad responsibilities, he enjoys biking. He and Katie also enjoy hiking and are looking forward to showing their girls the beauty of the Northwest.

Scott King

Bim manager

Over the last 16 years, Scott has honed his skills in the Architecture and Construction fields. As BIM Manager, he is responsible for keeping our BIM environment running smoothly, and teaches others the various aspects and new features therein. Scott uses his organizational skills to keep each project's drawings, files and photos organized to streamline the workflow. In addition to project organization and CAD efficiency, Scott is also the one we call with technical questions. His calm and encouraging words have talked many off the ledge as they attempt to throw their computer into the lake.

Married to an award winning Chef, Scott is the envy of the office and oftentimes showers us with culinary delicacies.

Ron Lee

PRINCIPAL (bbl), AIA, CSI

Ron is a cornerstone of BBL.  He is an architect with an extensive background working with educational, military, and other public clients.  Detailed and thorough in his approach, Ron is a clear communicator who engages comfortably with clients, other design team members and contractors to establish a common set of goals and aspirations. His leadership sets an organized course for positive interaction and successful projects. Ron approaches every project with great care, and he is dedicated to developing functional working environments that address his client’s needs and goals. Insistent on preparing construction documents that accurately depict existing conditions and design intent, he delivers documents that are clear, concise, coordinated, and complete.

Ron greatly respects our cultural and historic resources and is a past member and chair of both the Clackamas County Historic Review Board and the Clark County Historic Preservation Commission. Ron claims he spends his spare time becoming more historic.  He also enjoys reading mysteries, writing poetry (we notice his project specifications, however, don’t rhyme), spoiling nieces and nephews, and conversing with friends and family.

Christine Magana

PRINCIPAL (bbl), AIA, CSI

Christine graduated from University of Oregon in 1993 and joined BBL Architects in 1996. She has since received her licensing of Architecture and CDT certification. In 2011, she became a Principal and specializes in education and facilities design. She is happily married to Matthew and adores her two boys, Dylan and Zachary. In her off time, among spending time with her family, Christine enjoys to get away and read at their farm and home she designed and built.

Lisa Murphy

PRINCIPAL (bbl), INTERIOR DESIGNER, LEED AP BD+C

A strong advocate for sustainable design, Lisa is a LEED accredited professional and a founding member of the Lake Oswego Sustainability Advisory Board. She is constantly pushing family, friends and design projects to achieve higher standards of sustainability.

Thriving on social interaction, Lisa will often throw out design questions to the office to gather feedback and alternate design ideas. Her daily candid conversations often cause laughter at her expense, but enhances overall office collaboration and brings ease to a sometimes stressful work environment.

Lisa loves to read (she's a member in a ladies book club) and garden, but will most often be found chasing after her 4 young, adorable children.

Blaine Neu

DESIGNER, MARKETING

Loyal to the end, Blaine received both his Bachelors in 2010 and Masters of Architecture in 2012 from Washington State University. Proficient with CAD, BIM and a multitude of other design software, Blaine excels at expressing his ideas through mixed media. He is constantly pushing the envelope to take each design to the next level and enthusiastically jumps into every project with both feet. Blaine strikes the perfect balance between creativity and logic to keep his projects on budget and on schedule without compromising quality.

When not in the office, Blaine enjoys kayaking, cycling, and being out and about with his Golden Retriever of 11 years. When stuck indoors he can be found relaxing while reading, playing games...or being bullied by his cat...who he is also allergic to...go figure.

Doug Pruitt

PRINCIPAL (bbl), AIA, LEED AP BD+C

After many years of dedication to BBL, Doug became a principal in 2011. Doug has proven that he goes the extra mile for our clients and we have yet to discover a client that hasn’t enjoyed working with him. Doug’s clients know immediately that he is looking out for their best interests and they appreciate that. He knows his projects inside and out, including the most mundane details.

Homework, soccer and swim meets seem to dominate much of Doug’s spare time but he enjoys taking his wife Amy, and their three children camping or hiking every so often. Doug was an avid climber for many years and even though daily life often stands between him and his hobby, it is still a great passion for Doug.

Brandi Rasmusan

Office Manager

Brandi has been associated with BBL for over 15 years. She performed many administrative roles in addition to marketing assistant duties in her first 7 years. Brandi left BBL in 2005 to pursue her marketing career at a large Law Firm.

In 2011, she returned to BBL as our Office Manager. A day in the life of Brandi includes HR, workflow projections, accounts payable & receivable, payroll and anything else that crosses her desk. Why did she return you ask?...Because we are so AWESOME!!!

Brandi brings her sweet dog, Delilah, into the office several times a week. She and her husband, Chuck, are the recent proud adoptive parents of a 12 year old  daughter and  an eight  year old son. We are anxiously awaiting their first visit to the office!

Kristen Wist

Assistant Project Manager

Kristen grew up a military brat, bouncing around from place to place until settling in Lake Oswego since her high school years. An Oregon State graduate, Kristen keeps it local. She joined BBL in 2000 and has performed every administrative position imaginable from project manager to travel agent and payroll assistant to personal organizer. Her fine-tuned organization skills touch almost every project through detailed project schedules, construction phasing documents, and construction administration support.

When not in the office, Kristen can be found on the Lake Oswego High School sidelines cheering on her son's lacrosse and football teams.

Testimonials

What they Say?

I have dealt with few firms that paid as much attention to the detail of the project as did BBL Architects. A partner attended all design and construction meetings. The plans were complete and fully documented. Problems or issues were quickly identified and resolved with minimum cost to the school. The project was completed on time and on budget. They are an outstanding firm and deliver a quality service…If you select them as your architectural firm, you will not be disappointed.

CHARLES MCCARTHY

DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS OPERATIONS
WASHINGTON SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF

We couldn't be happier! [BBL] took our ideas, made some great design suggestions of [their] own and put together the finest and most efficient office in our region. We receive compliments daily from customers. In fact, we have gained customers because of our beautiful office in Lake Oswego. [Their] expertise and attention to detail made the entire process enjoyable.

RON C. ALLEN

FORMER VICE PRESIDENT
TRI COUNTY RETAIL MANAGEMENT

...a beautiful building geared towards developing an environment in which our students can learn. If form and function provide the basis for what architects work with, this is an exceptional job. ...a building the community is incredibly proud of, and it has provided the basis for building a whole new community in Spring Mountain.

RON NASO

FORMER SUPERINTENDENT
NORTH CLACKAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT

I have found [BBL] to be client oriented, good listeners, and always acting in the best interest of the client. From start to finish, regardless of the project size, they have served the school district well. Their firm is cost-conscious and works well with the owner to control costs without sacrificing quality. I have found them to act responsibly in this area during the construction phase with change orders favoring the owner.

R.M. THOMAS

FORMER ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT FOR BUSINESS SERVICE
LAKE OSWEGO SCHOOL DISTRICT.

By far, BBL is my favorite architecture firm to have worked with. [They] all manage to be professional, personable, unassuming and collaborative all at once.

TIM WITCHER

FORMER CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER
CLACKAMAS EDUCATION SERVICE DISTRICT

[BBL] is creative, yet willing to work with the client's ideas, provides excellent service, is open and approachable, is excellent at design and function, prepares excellent plans and specifications that are easily understood, ...is comfortable and effective in group process work, coordinates will with engineering consultants, communicates well within the firm and with the client. North Clackamas School District has high regard for BBL.

W.H. DIERDORFF

BUSINESS MANAGER
NORTH CLACKAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT

Communication is one of the firms strongest points. I have been impressed with the degree of "listening" that each job receives. There are numerous meetings involving staff that focus on collecting and refining program goals. Program goal refinement transitions into the design stage which again involves a great deal of attention, staff review, and consensus prior to final drawings.

JOSEPH BUCHER, JR.

FORMER DIRECTOR OF SUPPORT SERVICES
GRESHAM-BARLOW SCHOOL DISTRICT

The District has had an extremely positive working relationship with BBL and found them to be very helpful in solving problems and creative with developing solutions. The level of commitment and communications received has been more than adequate, in fact exceptional.
