about our firm

WHY WE ARE DIFFERENT

Every Architecture firm offers personalized service, on-time projects, and solutions that accommodate budget expectations. We do those things, and we do them well, but we also bring a human aspect to the design process.

We are a group of talented designers, thinkers, solvers, and best of all, genuine, humble people. This isn’t just a job for any of us; it’s our passion and part of our identity. We are enlivened by the built environment and are determined to create inspirational spaces that people want to be in as much as we enjoy designing them and seeing them through to life. Proud of our strong reputation of designing and detailing buildings of the highest quality, we love our work and couldn’t be more committed to our projects and to our clients.

BBL stands out in this industry for our internal alliance. Each team member has a variety of expertise and there isn’t an unyielding line between our job pursuits. This extends beyond the walls and minds of the firm where we are recognized by our ability to deliver innovative designs while carefully listening to and collaborating with our clients and their needs.  After all, we are all in this together.

Our firm culture is an asset not only to our clients, but to each project. Our collaborative demeanor means a project is not limited to the expertise of the individual members working on it, but that there is a larger, accessible network of creative thinkers, designers, and engineers where strengths convene to offer insight and expertise to every project.

In other words, we are collaboration junkies and we enthusiastically work together with our clients to create architecture that positively interfaces with the end-users on a daily basis.

Matt Atkins

ASSOCIATE ARCHITECT, aia/ncarb

After graduating from Syracuse University in 2003, Matt embarked on a cross country road trip that ultimately landed him in Portland. A licensed Architect in both Oregon and Washington, his propensity for thorough investigation has resulted in his unofficial role as BBL’s in-house code specialist. It doesn’t hurt that he is married to a Plans Examiner and Building Inspector for the Oregon Health Authority. Their dinnertime debates must be fascinating!

‍Matt enjoys playingdisc golf, tinkering in his garage “woodshop”, and family bike rides with his wife and two girls (that often result in impromptu barbecues with coworkers).

Lang Bates

Principal architect, aia

One of the founding principals of BBL Architects, Lang spent time working as a designer in Paris and the Portland metro area before forming BBL in 1978.

An award winning designer, his projects include a wide variety of educational, civic and commercial buildings. Lang is a skilled facilitator who understands how to develop design consensus between multiple stakeholders. His careful and inclusive approach documents varied user-group needs and goals and highlights priorities. This serves as a road map for the design team to tailor each design to the exact needs of our clients.

Lang is one of the first ones in the office every morning, but don't try to find him on a Friday afternoon unless you have a golf cart and a low handicap!

Scott King

Bim manager

Over the last two decades, Scott has honed his skills in the Architecture and Construction fields. As BIM Manager, he keeps our Revit, AutoCAD, and 3ds Max programs and office standards running smoothly. Scott is our technical problem solver and teaches our team best practices and new program features.

His calm and encouraging words have talked many off the ledge as they attempted to throw their computer into the lake. In his free time, Scott enjoys music, movies, writing, and working as his family’s historian and photo archivist.

Ron Lee

PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT, AIA, CSI

With nearly 50 years of experience, Ron has been a principal at BBL since January 1980.  Detailed and thorough in his approach, Ron engages with clients, other design team members and contractors to establish a common set of goals to assure successful projects. Ron serves as one of our chief specification writers.  Insistent on preparing construction documents that accurately depict existing conditions and design intent, he delivers documents that are clear, concise, coordinated, and complete.  His thorough review and understanding of project requirements - and his careful progress review of our project drawings -guide his preparation of each project’s specifications and assure experienced in-house quality control.

Ron greatly respects our cultural and historic resources and is a past member and chair of both the Clackamas County Historic Review Board and the Clark County Historic Preservation Commission. In his spare time,Ron enjoys reading mysteries, writing poetry (we notice his project specifications, however, don’t rhyme), spoiling nieces and nephews, and if you ask him, becoming more historic.

Christine Magana

PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT, specification writer, AIA, CSI

Christine is a licensed Architect and is certified in Construction Document Technology (CDT). In 2011, she became a Principal of our certified Women Owned firm. Financially resilient, Christine is tenacious at protecting budgets. She leads the charge in our firm’s low change order average. Her focused specification writing and thorough designs result in construction sets where information is clearly documented only once, eliminating conflicts and resulting change orders.

Christine just sent her oldest son off to college on a full scholarship. A farm-girl, Christine enjoys escaping through the Christmas trees to the home she designed and built.

Chris joined BBL in July of 2021. He has two different CAD drafting degrees. One of which he obtained while living in Florida. Upon moving back to his home state of Oregon, Chris updated his degree for the newer programs such as Revit, AutoCAD Architecture and Blue Beam. Chris has worked as an architectural drafter for over 7 years. His project experience includes wineries, warehouses, auto dealerships, data centers, schools and a state police headquarter. For many of these projects, Chris built the full  3-D models for use in coordination with consultants, contractors and clients. Chris is excited to broaden his knowledge and project experience with BBL Architects.

Chris Mathis

PRINCIPAL  INTERIOR DESIGNER, LEED AP BD+C

Lisa Murphy

Quickly approaching 20 years in the industry, Lisa is a strong advocate for sustainable and resilient design. She is a LEED accredited professional and a founding member of the Lake Oswego Sustainability Advisory Board.  Thriving on social interaction, Lisa will often throw out design questions to the office to gather feedback, propelling our concepts and designs forward. Her daily candid conversations often cause laughter, but enhances overall office collaboration and brings ease to a sometimes-stressful work environment.

Lisa is passionate about designing resilient buildings and communities. To say she is fascinated with the Cascadia Earthquake is an understatement…like an earthquake, she is a force to be reckoned with. Coined as the “eternal optimist”, Lisa sees the best in everything 95% of the time…the other 5% is flames. Embracing her 40’s with a new prescription of bifocals, Lisa keeps her eyes on the prize.

Blaine Neu

project manager, ncarb

Blaine received both his Bachelors and Masters of Architecture from Washington State University. Blaine is constantly pushing the envelope to take each design to the next level and enthusiastically jumps into every project with both feet.

His passion for design culminates with how technology influences design and how to balance an increasingly virtual/digital world with the ever-important built environment. His master thesis revolved around these ideas, focusing within the education sector where technology is drastically changing pedagogical methods.

When not in the office, Blaine enjoys traveling the world with his Partner. Outside of work, Blaine enjoys roughhousing with his dog, reading, playing games (tabletop and video) or being bullied by his cat...who he is also allergic to...go figure.

Chris Pena

Designer

With an Associates of Applied Science in Design and Drafting, Chris has over 20 years of drafting experience bridging structural, mechanical, construction and architectural fields. This diverse experience benefits our in-house integration of consultant design into our construction documents. Chris is proficient in both 2D and 3D design programs, and enjoys the collaboration and teamwork required to detail our complex projects. He believes that info is power - keeping an open mind, he works hard to gather as much information as possible and enjoys learning from and contributing to the success of his projects.

Chris is very athletic, excelling at wrestling, football and baseball. He participates in local softball teams around Lake Oswego and Portland city leagues.

Heather Peterson

project manager

Heather grew up in Reno Nevada, but her heart was always in the Pacific Northwest. In 2012, she left the desert behind and moved to Oregon.

Passionate about architecture and the environment, Heather graduated from Portland State University with a Bachelor of Architecture and an Environmental Sustainability minor. She embraces opportunities to combine her two passions by making sustainable design decisions on each of her projects.

Prior to working at BBL, Heather worked as tech support for Apple. To this day her friends and family bring her their glitchy electronics to troubleshoot…in exchange for chocolate. Heather’s love of technology and gaming directly translates to her design career through her strong Building Information Modeling (BIM) understanding.

Doug Pruitt

PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT, AIA, LEED AP BD+C

After many years of dedication to BBL, Doug became a principal in 2011. Doug has proven that he goes the extra mile for our clients and we have yet to discover a client that hasn’t enjoyed working with him. Doug’s clients know immediately that he is looking out for their best interests and they appreciate that. He knows his projects inside and out, including the most mundane details.

Homework, soccer and swim meets seem to dominate much of Doug’s spare time but he enjoys taking his wife Amy, and their three children camping or hiking every so often. Doug was an avid climber for many years and even though daily life often stands between him and his hobby, it is still a great passion for Doug.

Dan Vasquez

Senior architect, AIA

Dan originally worked with BBL in the early 2000's, and returned to “our family” earlier this year. In his first tenure at BBL, Dan designed municipal, military and educational facilities, but he returns with 15 years of private sector experience and several noteworthy design projects.Through this broad background, Dan has developed an organized and thoughtful problem-solving approach to design.  He excels at creating long-term client relationships with the goal of tailoring his designs to their specific needs and applying best practices from other industries to help them achieve their greatest success.

When not working, Dan spends time having fun with his wife and two young daughters.  He enjoys trips to the coast, biking and yelling at sporting events – including a girls soccer game or two .

Kristen Wist

project coordinator

Kristen grew up a military brat, bouncing around from place to place until settling in Lake Oswego in high school. She joined BBL in 2000 and has performed every administrative position imaginable from project manager to travel agent and payroll assistant to personal organizer. Her fine-tuned organization skills touch almost every project through detailed project schedules, construction phasing documents, and construction administration support.

When not in the office, Kristen can be found on the Lake Oswego High School sidelines cheering on her son's lacrosse and football teams.

Testimonials

What they Say?

I have dealt with few firms that paid as much attention to the detail of the project as did BBL Architects. A partner attended all design and construction meetings. The plans were complete and fully documented. Problems or issues were quickly identified and resolved with minimum cost to the school. The project was completed on time and on budget. They are an outstanding firm and deliver a quality service…If you select them as your architectural firm, you will not be disappointed.

CHARLES MCCARTHY

DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS OPERATIONS
WASHINGTON SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF

We couldn't be happier! [BBL] took our ideas, made some great design suggestions of [their] own and put together the finest and most efficient office in our region. We receive compliments daily from customers. In fact, we have gained customers because of our beautiful office in Lake Oswego. [Their] expertise and attention to detail made the entire process enjoyable.

RON C. ALLEN

FORMER VICE PRESIDENT
TRI COUNTY RETAIL MANAGEMENT

...a beautiful building geared towards developing an environment in which our students can learn. If form and function provide the basis for what architects work with, this is an exceptional job. ...a building the community is incredibly proud of, and it has provided the basis for building a whole new community in Spring Mountain.

RON NASO

FORMER SUPERINTENDENT
NORTH CLACKAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT

I have found [BBL] to be client oriented, good listeners, and always acting in the best interest of the client. From start to finish, regardless of the project size, they have served the school district well. Their firm is cost-conscious and works well with the owner to control costs without sacrificing quality. I have found them to act responsibly in this area during the construction phase with change orders favoring the owner.

R.M. THOMAS

FORMER ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT FOR BUSINESS SERVICE
LAKE OSWEGO SCHOOL DISTRICT.

By far, BBL is my favorite architecture firm to have worked with. [They] all manage to be professional, personable, unassuming and collaborative all at once.

TIM WITCHER

FORMER CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER
CLACKAMAS EDUCATION SERVICE DISTRICT

[BBL] is creative, yet willing to work with the client's ideas, provides excellent service, is open and approachable, is excellent at design and function, prepares excellent plans and specifications that are easily understood, ...is comfortable and effective in group process work, coordinates will with engineering consultants, communicates well within the firm and with the client. North Clackamas School District has high regard for BBL.

W.H. DIERDORFF

BUSINESS MANAGER
NORTH CLACKAMAS SCHOOL DISTRICT

Communication is one of the firms strongest points. I have been impressed with the degree of "listening" that each job receives. There are numerous meetings involving staff that focus on collecting and refining program goals. Program goal refinement transitions into the design stage which again involves a great deal of attention, staff review, and consensus prior to final drawings.

JOSEPH BUCHER, JR.

FORMER DIRECTOR OF SUPPORT SERVICES
GRESHAM-BARLOW SCHOOL DISTRICT

The District has had an extremely positive working relationship with BBL and found them to be very helpful in solving problems and creative with developing solutions. The level of commitment and communications received has been more than adequate, in fact exceptional.
